Meta vows EU privacy tweak after massive fine

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has promised to make changes to its privacy policies in the European Union after being fined for violating data protection laws. The social media giant was fined €110 million ($122 million) by the European Commission for providing misleading information during its acquisition of WhatsApp in 2014.

The European Commission found that Meta had told regulators that it would not be able to link WhatsApp user data with Facebook user data, but later did exactly that. This violated the company's commitments under EU merger rules.

As part of its response to the fine, Meta has promised to make changes to its privacy policies in the EU. The company has said that it will clarify how it uses data across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. It will also provide more information to users about how their data is collected and used.

Meta has also said that it will appoint a data protection officer for its EU operations, as required by EU law. The company has already appointed a global data protection officer, but the EU requires a separate officer for its operations within the bloc.

The changes to Meta's privacy policies are expected to be implemented in the coming months. The company has said that it is committed to complying with EU data protection laws and to protecting the privacy of its users.
