Even free transport can't shake Luxembourg's love of the car

Even free transport can't shake Luxembourg's love of the car

Despite being the first country in the world to offer free public transport, Luxembourg residents still prefer to use their cars. According to a recent study, only 20% of commuters use public transport, while 47% use their cars.

One of the main reasons behind this phenomenon is the lack of a comprehensive public transport system. While the free transport offer is a step in the right direction, it only covers certain areas and is not available 24/7. This means that many people still need to use their cars to get to work or run errands.

Another reason is the convenience and flexibility that cars offer. With a car, you can go wherever you want, whenever you want, without having to worry about schedules or routes. This is especially important for people who live in rural areas or have jobs that require them to travel frequently.

Finally, there is the issue of status. In Luxembourg, owning a car is seen as a symbol of success and wealth. Many people are willing to pay high prices for luxury cars and are not willing to give up this status symbol.

Despite these challenges, the government is committed to promoting sustainable transport and reducing traffic congestion. In addition to free public transport, they are investing in cycling infrastructure and encouraging carpooling. It remains to be seen whether these efforts will be enough to change the culture of car ownership in Luxembourg.
